It's nearly the end of the year!

27/12/2012

It's nearly the end of the year! I've got no more performances coming up this year but I do have lots of fun planned for next year! I'm ready for lots of family time, holidays and, as I'm in Australia- lots of summer fun!

I've had a ball with kids music this year. I've been especially excited about the release this month of my second album, 'Play is Serious Business', which seemed to take me a seriously long time to get done. In amongst music workshops and performances, working towards my Psychology degree, juggling school runs, kinder sessions and chasing after a toddler,  I managed to squeeze in time to work on the album but it did take a while! I'm very proud of the result, however, and I hope you love it too.

Thank you everyone who came to a show or bought my CD (or stopped me in the supermarket to say nice things). Your support has been incredible, I've really appreciated the emails, the facebook messages of support and the positive feedback at shows.

Making music for kids, singing songs about feelings (and about dinosaurs) and creating music for kids and their grown ups to connect through is a real labour of love for me. I feel grateful and privileged to be albe share my music with your children and families.

Giving children space to explore and understand their feelings, giving ourselves space to do the same, connecting and reconnecting with children and working on those relationships, even when things don't go smoothly, is an ambition that involves a lot of getting up, dusting ourselves off and starting a new day. I'm grateful for the kindness, encouragement and the inspiration of folks I've encountered over the past year and the patience of my kids, as I've dusted myself off a few times.

I wish for all of you a time for rest, rejuvenation and some time for family connectedness over these holidays and that you have a wonderful start to the New Year. And if it doesn't end up that way, if it all goes pear shaped, if the kids have a meltdown and you do too... tomorrow is a wonderful new day!

Treats!

24/12/2012

Many of you know my song 'Treats' from 'Songs of Connection'. This song was inspired by a certain little girl who lives at my house but since I released the album I've had so much wonderful feedback from others who have similar stories from their houses. I've even had adults share they they feel like this song was written just for them and their own quest to hide treats from themselves and then being unable to resist temptation.

Thanks to the wonderful Clelia for letting me share this gorgeous story of her son Flynn's trouble with treats, and his ingenious answers.

Mum: Flynn, did you get chocolates out of the cupboard and eat them?
F: Um, no.
Mum: I think you got the chair and climbed up and got them and ate them.
F: Oh. Oh, yes. But you left them where I could see the them, so you did it.

This made me giggle when I came across it. My clip for 'Angus and the Dinosaurs' is featured on online music mag NME, in their music clips section. There it is next to Dave Grohl and The Horrors. NME must love dinosaurs too! But really, who doesn't?

You can watch the clip for 'Angus and the Dinosaurs' below. Animation by Mat Blackwell with drawings by his daughter Indigo (who was 3 at the time).

If you're not already familiar with the creative and cute wonderfulness that is {KID} independent, you should definitely check it out. While you're at it, you can check out the write up about my song 'Family' that is being featured!

{KID}independent asked me to write about how the song 'Family', from my new album, 'Play is Serious Business' came about. You can read about it here: Alice Garrick on {KID}independent
Families are wonderful things. Every child deserves to feel connected, to feel secure, enveloped, grounded and loved within a family. To have a family as a compass point and a place of refuge. A family can be reflected in intentional relationships and doesn’t have to be bound by a traditional shape. We can share and celebrate with our children the wonderful normalness of every kind of family.

Here it is! The new clip for 'Family', the first track from my new album 'Play is Serious Business'.

A family can be reflected in connectedness and love and doesn't have to fit inside any fixed size or shape. A huge thank you to those families who submitted the gorgeous photos in this clip, sharing some moments of love and connectedness in their families.

Congratulations to 5 year old Annais for submitting her 'Rainbow Pony' picture into the 'Alice Makes Music Artwork Competition' to be included on the new Alice Makes Music album, 'Play is Serious Business'.

Annais's pony is the gorgeously colourful pony you can see on the disk of 'Play is Business' and inspired the colours on the rest of the disk artwork. You can see above the pony she's signed her artwork beautifully.

Thank you Annias for the wonderful Rainbow Pony! I love your style.
